Synopsis
In this semi-autobiographical story by writer-director Sophie Hyde, modern and traditional queer values collide as intergenerational family dynamics are explored. Known for being a trailblazer of gay rights in his heyday, Jimpa, the eponymous gay grandfather, is played by Oscar nominee John Lithgow. His daughter, Hannah, played by Oscar winner Olivia Colman, visits Amsterdam with her non-binary teenager, Frances, portrayed by Hyde’s own real-life child, Aud Mason Hyde. Frances, who is exploring their sexuality, suddenly drops a bomb: they wish to stay behind to seek out a truly queer community. Sharp, concise dialogue combines with heartfelt performances in a reflection on gender, pronouns, and sexuality-certain to spark engaging discussions. The film beautifully highlights the importance of family, love, and acceptance in today’s world, making it the perfect opening film for this year’s HKLGFF.
