Official Selection - Berlin International Film Festival
Well-received in this year’s Berlin Film Festival, The Wound put a spotlight on the annual ceremony of the men in a small Xhosa community. Each year, teenage boys are sent to the mountains to go through a painful ritual circumcision followed by two weeks of healing in order to be considered adults. Xolani, a lonely factory worker, joins the group each year to be their mentor and witness young men experiencing the ceremony towards manhood. When a defiant young man is sent to the camp by his wealthy father, Xolani’s world is turned upside-down when his secret can no longer be kept and the meaning of manhood is challenged by this newcomer.
