Madonna’s music video VOGUE and the documentary “Paris is Burning” from the early 1990s have made Ballroom a famous performance-based art form. After 25 years, a new generation of subculture is born, and they have created the KIKI Scene in New York. KIKI follows seven characters over the course of four years, filming their rehearsals, performances and their personal stories. Besides improving their dancing skills, these dancers have to battle against poverty, homelessness, sickness, discrimination and prejudice. Winner of this year’s Teddy Award for Best Documentary and Essay Film, KIKI is a well-reviewed documentary that is “sad, proud, loud, funny, energetic and affecting” according to SCREEN DAILY.
