Song Lang is an exquisitely stylised tribute to cải lương (a form of modern Vietnamese folk opera), queer romance, and gangster movies. Set in 1980s Vietnam, the film features Dung, a brooding debt collector who pays a visit to a cải lương company. He threatens to set the costumes ablaze unless the troupe pays up but at the same time he is fixated on one of its handsome young actors. The film captures a dilapidated splendour that is shot like Wong Kar-Wai’s half-remembered, half-romanticised 1960s Hong Kong. Full of beautiful imagery, this is the gay Vietnamese In the Mood for Love!
