Synopsis:
“Permanent Residence” is a sexually explicit sophomore effort from the director Scud, whose semi-autobiographical film examines gay sexual awakening and unrequited love for a heterosexual man. The story follows Ivan, an IT professional who falls hopelessly in love with Windsor, a sexy hunk who claims to be straight. However, they develop a friendship which gives the director an opportunity to observe his leading men, exposing their ripped bodies against different watery backdrops. Scud makes some affecting observations on the pressures of coming out, which possibly reflects his own journey from an IT professional to a homoerotic filmmaker. “Permanent Residence” was considered ground-breaking in the conservative environment of Hong Kong cinema when it was originally released.
